An Attempt to Categorize

This table elaborates some of the ways in which the meta-strategies may be categorized. We're not satisfied with these schema, and publish this simply as a work-in-progress.

Notes on the Categories

  • Dan's "Class of Appeal" refers to his email, which mentioned 3 classes. I have attempted to be specific about the kind of appeal, as well.
    • Appeal to Positive Emotion
    • Appeal to Negative Emotion
    • Appeal to Ignorance
  • Gives What Kind of Advantage? classifies meta-gaming strategies by the sphere of immediate advantage being targetted.
    • In-game advantages confer a benefit directly in the game being played (or a future game). It's like gaining currency and spending it in the same transaction.
    • Social advantages deal with the social fabric - the (typically unwritten) rules which govern conduct, and our standing in the group.
    • Psychological advantages pertain to a change in what specific other people believe or desire.
  • Prerequisites and Desirables attempt to capture what circumstances are required or favorable before a given meta-strategy is usable.  Inherently imprecise, but possibly useful.
  • Results Available When? is another category of questionable utility, which tries to broadly indicate which strategies are "quick play" and which require longer planning.
